How to read it
The entire US federal debt expressed in bitcoin. It is a large number — far more bitcoin than will ever exist — but the direction is the point: measured in bitcoin, the same debt has fallen by more than 99% since 2015, even as it has risen relentlessly in dollars.
How it's calculated
Total public debt outstanding, from the US Treasury's daily 'Debt to the Penny' series, divided by that day's bitcoin price.
What it did in past cycles
Measured in bitcoin, US public debt stood at 101.5 billion BTC on 2015-01-14 and at its record low of 300 million BTC on 2025-08-13 — a fall of 99.7% over a decade in which the dollar figure more than doubled.
The reversals are as instructive as the trend. At the December 2017 top the figure was 1.05 billion BTC; twelve months later, at the December 2018 bottom, it was 6.74 billion — six times higher, with no change in fiscal policy responsible. The same happened after 2021: 428 million BTC at the November top against 1.97 billion a year later.
At the October 2025 peak it read 304 million BTC, and 674 million by 2026-06-30.
What it doesn't tell you
The fall is driven overwhelmingly by Bitcoin's price appreciation, not by any reduction in debt. Run the same calculation from a cycle top and it looks very different. It is an illustration of what happens when you change the unit of account, not a claim that the debt is being repaid.
The line also rises during bear markets — it more than doubled between October 2025 and June 2026 — for the same reason it falls during bull markets. Anything denominated in a volatile unit inherits that volatility, which is the honest counterpart to the headline.
Reading it with other metrics
Bitcoin vs US debt shows the two series separately, which is the way to see how much of any move in this line came from the numerator rather than the denominator — almost all of it, almost always.
World government debt puts the US figure in context, and hard money covers why the unit of account is the argument rather than a presentational choice.
